I’ve been busy lately. Work, sales rep, event planning, sick kids, anniversary, etc…. Not any one thing just life in general. Busy isn’t bad, it just is. Running, swimming and training in general are perfectly great and I’m beginning to get excited about the race season!!!! This is where my head is at:
Tuesday morning I did my slow, short run with Kalley. I allow her to set the pace somewhat and, because she’s a young puppy, I know a good half of the run isn’t going to go “well”. Distractions, tug of war with the leash, refocusing her, etc… This run was different. Possibly a fluke, possibly she’s just getting it. Regardless, over time I know she’ll figure it all out. I’ve said before she brings me my shoe randomly and her leash. She jumps in the car enthusiastically wagging her little nub. She loves to go. When I stagger out early in the morning wearing my running clothes, she looks at me expectantly assuming she’s coming with me.
I planned on 2.5 miles since she’s only up to 3 and from the get go she was just on. Yes, I still had to correct and refocus her but she spent a lot of time just being there. I kept looking down to make sure she was still there because we’d go several minutes with no tension in the leash. Usually she runs at about a 12 minute mile average, but this time we averaged 9:49. It was just fun.
My team met Tuesday night and most of them are doing the Napa Marathon this Sunday so we did an easy, flat 5.2 miles. Who am I to complain just because I’m not running the marathon?? I’m here to support my team!! It’s lighter so much longer now I hardly needed my knuckle lights, it wasn’t very windy and the temps in the high 30’s made the cold bearable. Sometimes it all just clicks
I’ve been called the “Snot Rocket Queen” on more than one occasion. I can only assume it’s akin to all the other “Queens” in the movies….. The good ones anyway. There are a couple bonuses to cold weather running. One: More clothes means more pockets. I don’t like to carry much but if you have to, it’s easier to have a place to put it. Two: A sleeve to wipe your nose on when you snot rocket. Be grossed out – just because I’m willing to verbalize it doesn’t mean we don’t all do it. Also just because I get that crap out of my body doesn’t mean that non snot rocketers don’t wipe their noses.
I’ve seen wrist bands online. Some have a zipper pocket (have one) to put stuff in but I didn’t like the bouncing. I also saw one that you wrapped around your wrist but alas, I haven’t been able to find it. At any rate, I decided to make my own. When the warmer weather hits, I want to be prepared. No wiping the nose on bare skin or pulling up my shirt – I’m keepin’ it classy!!!
At one of the races I did last year they gave away tubes of fabric with running slogans on them. I somehow ended up with several and all my kids got them as well. Sam likes the “pirate” version…
I am a morning person. On my own, I’m awake around 5:30am. If it’s a day off I force myself back to sleep and can usually make it until 7am when I get up amazed that I got in a little more of that blissful, potent morning sleep. Chris is a night person. He’s ready to go around 9pm when I’m drooling on myself in a semi-comatose state and doesn’t come to bed until around 2am. So he says. How would I know?? I’m halfway through my sleep!! At any rate, about half of my kids are morning people. We all come softly to the living room and have morning cuddles, stretch and yawn and talk about tackling the day. I love the quiet, the solitude of the mornings. Kalley being a puppy needs a routine and I love our mornings. Even in the cold (which I’ve mentioned is not my thing), when the sun is just up and there’s no wind, just the quiet of the morning, I love being outside with Kalley for the ten minutes it takes her to decide to go to the bathroom. It’s peaceful, calm, serene. She learned to join in on the cuddles with the kids and me and even my kiddos who are more inclined to be up late at night know mornings are the time to score some nice down time with mom. We do craft projects at 8am, we plan our day, we talk about the dreams we had at night, we talk about the goals we want to achieve. Mornings remind me a little of running. Different conversations, major decompression, lots of thinking, stretching and feeling good.
Not from running. Duh!! From work… It’s nice to regroup and get things cleaned up. I was up at 5:30, left at 6:30 for a run with my team. 15*, very little wind (thankfully!!) and 9 miles done. I averaged 8:30 minute miles. Not fast for me, not slow. It was pretty flat and I had no issues except the cold. Wearing so many layers and bundling up inhibits my groove. We were blessed with a couple days that spiked into the 50’s and I relished the warmer temperatures. I long for them. I like heat. Fortunately for me, I like training MORE than I dislike cold. Vanity is awesome. Everyone just gets to hear me complain about it, but when I’m surrounded by people who are complaining about the heat, I’ll just smile and feel blissful.
We have a mile marker for mile repeats on a paved trail through some wetlands. My team knows I might have a slight crush on Dwayne Johnson so they give me crap about “the rock”. HAHAHAHA!!!!!!
