Winter Running

It’s cold. Sure, not as cold as Alaska when I lived there, but still cold. It snows too. Not always as much as this year and not as much as other places, but we get it. This year quite a bit of it, relatively speaking. Ice. It’s everywhere. I’ve only gone running in temps as low as 13* this year. I’ve also bypassed running when the roads have been excessively crappy which seems like a lot. I used to run no matter what, but then I broke my foot. That taught me to be more of a fair weather runner – or at least less stupid about running. Winter running isn’t just about the clothing you wear – although that makes it manageable – it’s about being safe and following rules differently. Continue reading

Sac River Trail 15K – Shasta Trail Run

Net down.  Get those words right out of your head.  They mean ONLY that from the start to the finish, you have gone down in elevation.  This is the second race I’ve done this summer that was a “net down” and they were the two most difficult races of the year (Bizz Johnson and this one).  They also were both on trails which I find to be technically more difficult but a lot more fun. Bizz Johnson Express Half Marathon 2015

First, let me preface by saying that this is by far one of my favorite races.  It’s absolutely beautiful, well run, super fun and low key.  It’s a net down but feels flat (except one big down followed immediately by an up).  Great aid stations, good people, bus system that actually works seamlessly and a finish that feeds an army.  With beer included.  Amazing and I’d do it again in a heartbeat.  Having said that……..  It was not one of my better days, but that’s part a roll of the dice which all runners are aware just happens without rhyme or reason and part not giving my body what it needed. Continue reading

Creating My Capsule Wardrobe

So far I’ve pretty much sucked at this. I like all my clothes out instead of boxing them up and storing them and only having one season out at a time, so I might give up on having a traditional capsule wardrobe. I did change my mindset a bit to help me streamline (aka downsize) even more though. Continue reading

Inspiration In A DNF

DNF.  Those horrid little letters that mean SO much to a runner.  Did Not Finish.  It’s one thing us runners try desperately to avoid.  The finish, after all, is where we want to be.  Why, though, can’t we embrace the DNF?  Why does it have to be such a bad thing? Continue reading
